A comprehensive and robust training programme gives our staff the knowledge and expertise needed to provide the highest quality of care for patients.
All new employees undertake an induction programme before they begin their role. The duration and content is determined by our training matrix and can take various forms, including workbooks and classroom learning followed by practical sessions and driving experience.
Once the induction has been completed, staff continue to be supported through a workplace mentor. The new employee will crew with the mentor until the more experienced member of staff is confident that they are able to carry out their role independently, ensuring the safety of both the patient and themselves.
Higher Dependency crews are required to undergo additional accredited training:
- Emergency Medical Technician.
- Advisory Defibrillation.
- Blue Light Driving.
- ALS (Advances Life Skills).
Annual refresher courses take place for all employees and include updates on policies, practice and law.
Our trainers also undertake an annual refresher course with a clinical practitioner. Each year we also carry out a strategic review of our training requirements in order to ensure that we are compliant with Government training requirements. For example in 2015 PREVENT training was introduced to all our front line staff.
Our driver instructors hold an Advanced Driving Instructors qualification.
Volunteers are required to undertake two days of classroom training before they begin their role and attend an annual refresher session.
Third party and agency staff are only used if the agency is an ATSL-approved agency. All agency staff placed are required to undertake an induction with a local operational manager which includes familiarisation with specific policies/contractual requirements etc.
And it isn’t just our frontline staff that receive training and support. We offer a range of courses and initiatives for all of our people to develop their skills and knowledge. This includes:

All staff training is recorded on our HR system with copies of certificates kept in employees files. Employee rotas are configured to allow for the release of employees for mandatory training refresher courses to ensure that training will not disrupt our operational services and the quality of care patients receive.
